Diclofenac: Use, Redirection and Side Effects

Diclofenac (INN) is a painkiller or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Available under various names around the world. The name Diclofenac is derived from the chemical name: 2- (2,6-dichloranilino) phenylacetic acid. First brought to market in 1973. The drug diclofenac is available as sodium or potassium salts. 

 

Use of Diclofenac:

Diclofenac is used for pain, inflammatory diseases, dysmenorrhea, or painful menstruation. Inflammatory diseases include arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, polymyositis, dermatomyositis, ankylosing spondylitis, gout, etc.

It is also used in cases of kidney stones or gallstones, migraine pain, etc. Diclofenac is also used to relieve post-operative or traumatic mild to moderate pain. Diclofenac is also available as an ointment that is used topically for strain or traumatic or inflammatory pain. [6] It is used in cancer pain.

Redirection of Diclofenac:

Hypersensitivity to diclofenac.

The third trimester of pregnancy.

Stomach and peptic ulcer.

Inflammatory bowel diseases such as Ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, Liver and kidney disease.

Side Effects of Diclofenac:

Diclofenac increases the risk of a heart attack. FDA Medical Officer David Graham reviews that diclofenac increases the risk of myocardial infarction. It can also cause peptic ulcers and liver damage. Diclofenac can damage the kidneys by reducing prostaglandin synthesis in the kidneys. Recent studies have shown that regular use of diclofenac increases the risk of stroke.

Regular use of diclofenac and other drugs in this group, such as aspirin, can cause temporary infertility. Depression, anxiety, restlessness, nightmares, etc. can cause mental disorders. It can cause worm antibody hemolytic anemia.
